Wow! Where have I been for the past month?! I’m not even sure!
Life has been such a whirlwind lately, that I haven’t been able to keep up with the daily goings-on. My life has reached the point where I can say I’m working three jobs, and while it’s a lot on my plate, I don’t regret it one bit. There is a great deal of change for the better going on at my day job, which probably won’t settle down until fall. I run a small, Irish sean nós dance studio, and I’ve been working hard to organize a handful of my dancers to go to the Sean Nós Northwest Festival in Washington next weekend. We’re all very excited for a weekend of learning about and celebrating Irish culture, but I’ll be glad when it’s over.
And then there’s writing.
When I started posting Unbecoming Humans to Wattpad last June, I knew I was desperate for a creative outlet, but I didn’t realize how much it would consume me once I found it. I threw Off Pitch into so many pitch events last month that I lost track!
I didn’t make it past round 2 of #SonOfAPitch, but I made many new friends, received invaluable feedback, and learned so much about querying and writing in general that I don’t regret a single moment of it. If you’d like to see how the querying/feedback/revising process shook out, go check out my post on Elizabeth Roderick’s blog! Elizabeth Roderick, Kathy Palm, Ayden K. Morgen, and Elsie Elmore have my infinite gratitude for sharing their words of wisdom.
As I said before, #SonOfAPitch was the stepping stone to many pitch events that I threw my hat into this month. After peppering several days of Twitter pitching into my busy life, I received four requests for queries, submitted my full Off Pitch manuscript to three separate publishers, and am anxiously waiting to hear back from them. In the mean time, I have two more pitch events coming up this week! Fingers crossed that I will get a couple more requests from agents and publishers for my query!
My favorite news of the month is that my dear friend Maggie Derrick recommended Off Pitch for Wattpad’s LGBTQ+ book of the month, and it was chosen! In a comedic turn of events, I had also recommended her book, The Star and the Ocean, which was chosen as well! You can find both of our books on the Wattpad LGBTQ+ Book of the Month list. The Star and the Ocean is one of my favorite books of all time, and I could gush on and on about it forever, but you should probably just go read it.
The latest news is that I am participating in Camp NaNoWrimo with the goal of finishing Out of Eden, book 2 of the Unbecoming Humans series, by the end of this month! I’ve given myself a 30,000-word-count goal this month, which should take us to the finish line. Stay tuned for more on Camp NaNo, Irish cultural experiences, and the business of querying throughout the month!
Thanks for stopping by, and stay human!
